ISLAMABAD: Former Prime Minister (PM) Nawaz Sharif on Friday urged the Chief Justice (CJ) Saqib Nisar to take a suo moto notice on ‘anti-democratic’ moves such as delaying general elections, horse-trading in Senate elections and no-confidence motion against Balochistan’s chief minister.
Sharif welcomed CJ’s remarks that any delay in general elections would not be accepted. Addressing the media outside accountability court, Sharif appreciated CJ’s words, hoping that CJ would also act upon his words.
Nawaz stated that “his party or the civil society will not let elections be postponed at any cost”.
Sharif urged Nisar of playing fair in the game of justice, as standards should be equal for all the players. He said that a clean chit should not be handed over to one player while the others’ hands are tied. Nawaz questioned the alleged leniency shown to Imran Khan when he was disqualified as PM and removed as party president in the wake of Panama Papers scandal.
Former PM revealed that he would be requesting PM Shahid Khaqan Abbasi to declare the National Accountability Ordinance (NRO) ineffective during the interim setup as it is a Black Law that targets and punishes politicians. Nawaz expressed concern that the NRO might play tactics in undermining free and fair elections with the misuse of National Accountability Bureau’s (NAB) law.
Nawaz upon being questioned about Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) leader Asif Ali Zardari responded that PPP didn’t have voters or supporters in Punjab to form the government. Sharif highlighted that politics shouldn’t be done on the basis of provinces. “Pakistan belongs to all the provinces and all the sections of the society”, he said.
Pakhtunkhwa Milli Awami Party (Pk-MAP) chief Mahmood Khan Achakzai said that it’s the parliament’s job to make and pass legislations and the job of other institutions to implement it. He added that the Judiciary should respect the parliament and protect the constitution as it had taken oath to do so.
